afab
Hi, does anybody have knowledge about this course? Any information would be good... Thank you
petipacat
Yes It is really good . It runs the 28th july to friday 3rd august , this is its 30th year . It is usually fully residential although there are a few limited day places available . The Children have daily classes in Ballet, jazz, contemporary .classical greek, spanish, national and repetoire and musical theatre. ages are 10,11,12 year olds---- Grade 3/standard 3 13 and 14 years Grade 4?standard 4 15 and 16 year olds grade6/standard6 or be studying at this level Generally places are given to Cecchetti students first and other methods are welcome . My daughter has been lots of times and has had a fab time , the staff are really friendly and the younger children are housed in mansion house in dorms, they tend not to put pupils from the same school together in the dorms and mix pupils from different schools together this provides a great place to mix and find new friends. They are also running a summer school at tring on the same dates for vocational students 16 years currently studying any method at Advanced 1 to diploma level Hope this is of some help petipacat

aileen
Do you need a teacher's recommendation for this course? Are the standards the Cecchetti standards? My 11 year daughter is in a Standard 5 Cecchetti class. Would she be put with the older children? Also, how do the Cecchetti standards compare to the RAD graded exams? petipacat
Hi aileen no you don't need a teachers recommendation, most teachers have the info about the course and should give it out to their pupils. As to comparing it is always difficult lol.The work they get is all unset . As to your daughters age she would be put with pupils her own age group ,they also have a lovely choreography comp and the children usually choose who they would like to work with ,i.e the friends they have made .Oh and they usually have a themed party last year was Grease . w445403
It makes it diffcult at times when they stick to ages i.e when the levels don't match where your child is "15 and 16 year olds grade6/standard6 or be studying at this level" - DS just turned 13 and has already done Senior Standard 7 - grade 4/4 standard 4 was about 2 years ago so not sure if there would be enough 'challenge'
taxi4ballet
Call them and have a chat, the lady I spoke to was really helpful and answered all my questions.
petipacat
They usually go on your grade /standard level I have found that even my pupils at intermediate level find the course enough of a challenge ,give them a ring they are very helpful (yippeee my first ever smiley face )
aileen
I like the sound of this summer school but it might be too expensive for us this year (as a family we're supposed to be economising!). I think I'll speak to dd's teacher to see what she thinks.
taxi4ballet
Had a letter this morning to say DD has a place, she is going to be really excited, expecially as she's never done any Cecchetti before and we didn't know if she would be accepted. I've got a couple of questions for people who've been before... Would it be helpful if she has a few lessons from a Cecchetti teacher before she goes? (She has an RAD exam soon and I'm not sure if it would confuse her re arms etc, as I believe the styles are quite different). Reading through the stuff, it mentions Greek classes, what do people normally wear? Will she be ok in a leotard / wraparound skirt? I don't want her to feel the odd-one-out if she hasn't got the right tabard or whatever, and looking at the prices on eBay I don't want to have to buy one if I can help it! Peach3
I'm no expert but my daughter studies the Cecchetti method and the difference between RAD and Cecchetti would be more curious and interesting to her rather than confusing or upsetting. She has other teachers at different schools and doesn't seem to get flustered although she has mentioned the odd tiny difference like the placing of an arm for example but it is always in a conversational way rather than actually worrying about it. Hope this helps x

The styles are different but if she has an RAD exam soon then don't worry about Cecchetti lessons. Best bet is to call them and say that whilst your daughter is really looking forward to this, she is a bit concerned about not being familiar with the style so could the teachers be made aware of this. And then you can also ask about uniform requirements for Greek.
taxi4ballet
Thanks for that, we probably won't bother with lessons then. On the paperwork it says either greek tabard or leotard/skirt for the greek classes, but I was wondering what others have worn in previous years. Also it is an Olympic themed party this time, so they might be doing more greek than normal...?
Ecarte
My daughter has attended this Summer school for years and loved it. I usually send her with a collection of different dancewear and let her choose the most appropriate,we have never had a problem. It's not that formal except for the ballet. A chiffon skirt was also mentioned, perhaps this with a leotard would be most suitable. Also your daughter should not worry about the different style. The teachers are fabulous also Miss Paris and Miss Ruth who run it all are wonderful, kind and very approachable. Additionally there are older girls there who look after the dorms and they are a source of help and support to the kids. If she is at all worried once there they will be able to help her too. I think from what my DD says (cecchetti trained) they do more work at the barre and a couple of moves have slightly different names than RAD but it is really not that different. Every year she comes home with many many more friends to be added to her social network pages I am sure your DD will be the same.

taxi4ballet
afab, My DD is 13, she does RAD inter and has recently taken her grade 7 exam. No idea what that equates to in Cecchetti grades though!
afab
DD3 is doing it this summer. How old is your DD Taxi4ballet ? I meant to say DD1 is doing it. She's 14 and, since we live in France, hasn't got RAD nor Cecchetti grades. Her teacher had to write a list of the things she can do and Miss Notley put her in the top class. Maybe our DDs will be together...
petipacat
Hi taxi4ballet, Don,t worry if your dd has not done Cecchetti before it wont be a problem , My DD has been for many years and has made some lovely life long friends . This year she is doing the cecchetti vocational summer school (also held at tring at the same time ) .The teachers are fantastic . Every one usually takes a picnic on arriving and sit on the lovely lawn before the children go in . As for the Greek classes a leotard and chiffon skirt is fine .They usually do a choreography comp as well which is great fun . You never know we may all bump into each other when we drop off children , I shall where a flower in my hair lol

taxi4ballet
We could carry a rolled-up copy of the 'Dancing Times' My dd is really looking forward to it, she's been to the Christmas and Easter courses at Tring before and feels really at home there.

aileen
I'd be grateful for some feedback on this Summer School as I dithered about sending my DD and, once I had decided to make enquiries, all the places had been filled. I would particularly like to know whether the School is really designed for DCs who are considering a career in dance. My DD has no plans at the moment to pursue a career in dance and I wondered if it would be too intense for her. Does anyone know if Cechetti run similar courses at other times of the year? Ecarte
My dd has attended for many years and has been lucky enough to have been awarded a scholarship to go. There seems to be a mixture of abilities and ages. I know many girls attending who are going to vocational schools and some who are competent fun dancers who do not wish to persue a career in dance. The kids always seem to have a fabulous fun time with a full schedule of classes, choreographic competition and socialising. It is not restricted to ballet but there is a strong ballet bias. The kids are divided into groups I think on age and ability( taken from entry form grades you send in) and they rotate around teachers and studios into classes in such disciplines as choreographic skills, ballet, national, contemporary, classical Greek, jazz, pointe, musical theatre. ( not all in one day! But at least one ballet lesson per day) Early evenings are generally spent practicing for the choreographic competition held on the final afternoon. There is a vocational students course held and a teachers course not sure when these run but I am not aware of another residential course that they hold during the year. There is of course their Associates and Scholars scheme that runs throughout the year. Hope that those new to the Summer School enjoy it as much as my DD has in the past.
taxi4ballet
Dd had a fabulous time - she particularly enjoyed the Spanish and Greek, neither of which she had done before. Also she said that she really liked the pilates and conditioning classes and she has come away with some very useful tips. By the way, if anybody has got home and found an extra black camisole top in their luggage (adult small, with Cecchetti logo on it) it's ours, so please send me a pm!
petipacat
DD had a fantastic time at the summer school ,she loved the pas de deux . Watching all the children perform at the choreographic comp was an absolute joy,The ideas they came out with were amazing and just to see the love of dance on there faces was brilliant . There seemed to be a real sense of camaraderie with all the children, every one clapped and cheered after each solo or group piece . I really enjoyed watching the vocational students perform the spanish routine and the dance of the mirlitons . Hope every one who attended had a lot of fun
afab
We missed each other again Petitpacat! This time I was in the audience watching the competition as an overseas parent! DD was number 1 and we missed her dance due to too much traffic on the M25! How annoying that was! Which was was your DD if you don't mind me asking? She was in the vocational, wasn't she? Appart from that, DD loved it. Especially the atmosphere, she thought everybody was wonderful, Miss Paris, Miss Ruth, the helpers and the kids. And the teachers were so nice, she also said... aileen
The summer school sounds really good. It sounds as if everyone had a lovely time. I'll have to be more organised next year and apply earlier.
