Xandra Newman
I keep my fingers crossed for Sambe but I am concerned he was injured during the first half of the season so he did not dance the entire season (which is required before a promotion). Magri is really lovely but I feel she needs another year before she attains a higher level of dancing in order to be considered for promotion. Maybe once a principal position becomes available in the near future? Edited May 31, 2019 by Xandra Newman typo
Lindsay
I think the tone of that press announcement actually indicates they will not be promoted this year. It goes out of its way to explain why non-principals are acceptable substitutes and flags the presence of principals in other roles. Hours of careful drafting behind that effort I imagine.. These were exactly my thoughts too Lindsay when I read the Press announcement. Mr. O'Hare carefully justifying why two First Soloists will be dancing with a Principal and thus reassuring the Japanese audience.

I agree about Magri, and also that the wording of the announcement would tend to indicate that promotions are not secure, but I wonder how hard and fast that requirement for an injury-free season is. It sounds more like a custom than a rule to me, unless someone has seen something official to back it up.
Xandra Newman
I have heard this from a few dancers, but yes never officially.
Fonty
I remember seeing Magri in Monotones 1, and thinking she was miscast, as she seemed to be struggling at times with the choreography. Of course that was a while ago, but I can't say she has really caught my eye since then. Perhaps I just haven't seen her in the right things. Great personality and flair, but she did miss a few steps/noticed her timing was out at some points. I think she's got great potential and know that everyone has their off days (I believe she was filling in for Laura Morera on this day in fact so appreciate that she stepped in last minute to do a show she wasn't originally supposed to do, although she had been in cast in the role she was probably a bit exhausted from all the shows!) and dancers are only human. However I feel she isn't (in my non specialist opinion) ready for principal level (at least not yet) and I'd be very surprised to see her promoted this year. I also felt a little disappointed with her Queen of the Dryads in DQ (again, I believe she wasn't supposed to be dancing that evening but there was a cast reshuffle) as similarity I saw great potential but something didn't quite work for me. Perhaps I just don't like her style (which is to take nothing away from her as a clearly excellent dancer) but we all have our preferences. I see her as a great strong character artist in future (not necessarily the rank, just that she seems to me to be suited to more dramatic characters rather than pure classic roles) and hope she develops her skills. Although I won't be seeing her in it I see her potentially doing very well as the Firebird with her fantastic expressions, will be interesting to hear what others report on this.
Xandra Newman
I think she hasn't yet reached the necessary consistency in all of her performances (I saw her Kitri) and therefore she will need more time to develop and mature. Rushing a dancer does not do them any favour, on the contrary. To be a principal requires a high level of performance quality and technical consistency (of course, they too can have an off day)

I guess Reece Clarke will have to wait because of missed opportunities due to injury. Lower down, definitely Leo Dixon, possibly Harry Churches and Sae Maeda. I would like to see Leo Dixon promoted.

Juliet, possibly more than any other ballet, gives wonderful opportunities for young dancers and I would like to see the more mature Principals held back from this one. Balletfanp
Anna Rose O’Sullican has just congratulated him on Instagram, so it must be true. Clumsy of the Times, though. However, I’m delighted for Sambe - extremely well deserved.
capybara
COMPLETELY THRILLED FOR MARCELINO. i just hope that this blip doesn't take the shine off things for him in any way. [It is actually possible that not all dancers will have had their annual interviews yet, so an announcement may not be feasible.]

Sim
A big embarrassment for the RB press department. I am also thrilled for Marcelino, but I think it’s fair to all the promoted dancers that the promotions are announced at the same time, which is the norm. So I think the announcement will come when everyone has had the chat with KoH.

Bruce
Marcelino Sambé promoted to Principal dancer with The Royal Ballet The Royal Ballet announces promotion for the 2019/20 Season. Director of The Royal Ballet Kevin O’Hare today announces that Marcelino Sambé has been promoted to Principal dancer, the highest rank in the Company. O’Hare comments: “I’m thrilled to announce that Marcelino Sambé will become a Principal dancer from the start of the 2019/20 Season. He has had a fantastic year with some notable debuts, including a dazzling Basilio in Carlos Acosta’s Don Quixote, and a heartfelt Romeo in Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet. The impressive range of his artistry has also been displayed in his performances this Season in Crystal Pite’s Flight Pattern, Frederick Ashton’s Les Patineurs and Wayne McGregor’s Infra. He has the most wonderful personality that endears him to audiences and fellow Company members alike. I know everyone will be delighted with the news of his promotion. He has accomplished so much since joining the Company from The Royal Ballet School, and I’m very excited to see him progress to the next phase of his career.” Born in Lisbon, Marcelino Sambé joined The Royal Ballet in 2012 from The Royal Ballet Upper School. He was promoted to First Artist in 2014, Soloist in 2015 and First Soloist in 2017. He began his training at the National Conservatory of Lisbon. His repertory with the Company includes Romeo (Romeo and Juliet), Basilio (Don Quixote), Colas (La Fille mal gardée), Oberon (The Dream), Hans-Peter/Nutcracker (The Nutcracker), Mercutio (Romeo and Juliet), Lescaut (Manon) and Benno (Swan Lake). He has created roles in Crystal Pite’s Flight Pattern, Obsidian Tear, Multiverse and Woolf Works by Wayne McGregor, and Hofesh Shechter’s Untouchable. Sambé’s dance awards include a silver medal at the Moscow International Ballet Competition in 2008, first prize at the Youth American Grand Prix in 2009, a gold medal and special award at the USA International Ballet Competition in 2010 and the Dance Europe Award for Outstanding Male Performance (Classical) at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards 2017. Details of additional promotions, leavers and joiners will be announced at the end of the season.

JohnS
Great to see Marcelino Sambé’s official promotion. But I do think given the cock up it would be much better to bring forward the announcement of other promotions as soon as possible so that all those promoted can be acknowledged in forthcoming performances. Is ‘end of the season’ after the tours or after 14 June?
