alison
Bah! And I booked myself up for this evening, thinking it was a clear night. Hoping it'll be online for a while afterwards.
Richard LH
From the cast list I wonder if Annette will be dancing as Mercedes, with Lukas B B as Espada and with the 6 other gentlemen as his matador compadres??

Blossom
I’m at ROH for the insight and I am 80% sure that Aaron S Watkin and a group of people passed by (marched through) the foyer cafe a few mins ago… Another heavy day so perhaps a wild imagination. Linnzi5
I really enjoyed that! I had a lovely view from my seat and thought the dancers were great! A really enjoyable trip to ROH - and on a work night too! 🤣 Well done to all involved and I am very grateful to the generous person who gave me the ticket! 😀
Richard LH
Very pleased that Christopher Saunders confirmed that the RB will be keeping with Acosta's original version, and not including the changes he has introduced for the BRB.
Blossom
It was a really lovely rehearsal. Christopher Saunders makes it look like every day in the studio is hard work but lots of fun. A great selection of dancers and hope I get to see this Mercedes and Espada.
Richard LH
Also I would like to say that the I think Royal Ballet dancers are very fortunate to have Christopher as Rehearsal Director. His 40 years experience with the Company must be invaluable, and his Insight rehearsals are always so enthusiastic and instructive.

It can’t cope with mix of languages … French ballet terms and English. it is possible for the ROH to replace them later with their own correct subtitles. Some uploaded fo this. The musical arrangement for BRB seemed to me to be much more in the spirit of Don Q than the RB one.

I much preferred the BRB production (although I enjoyed both) because it got rid of those ludicrous moving buildings and I loved the additional duet at the start of act 2.

That change was the main problem for me, as I love the RB Act 2 PDD and music (despite it being imported from La Bayadere). Anyway, between us we can be happy with our respective versions Jan!

I shall look forward to reading all the reports about it!

I'm with you, Jan ..... Plus - it seems - or so the Rehearsal Director said - that Acosta wants this outing for his Royal DQ to be 'faster' - Fat chance I fear with THAT orchestration. I fear it does nothing my make my teeth grit - but appreciate there are those who seem to enjoy/prefer it. To each their own. Always was; always will be.
capybara
Does anyone know anything about the presenter for the Insight? I haven't seen (or heard) of her before. She was fine except that it seemed a little as if she wasn't familiar with the ballet itself.
Lindsay
Agree Bruce. I watched the streaming of the Vienna DQ at the weekend and the music was SO much better and really complemented all the beautifully quick footwork in the Nureyev version! It is going to make the RB ‘arrangements’ very difficult to bear….

capybara
Thanks Ondine and Bluebird. I should have done that myself. To Marie-Claire’s CV must therefore be added ‘knows someone within the ROH who got her the gig’. I rather like it when a Company member is the host and I’m sure they also come cheaper as some others might have to be paid for their ‘preparation time’ as well as for the work they do on the night. (Not that I’m suggesting that dancers should do ‘extras’ for free - I hope they do get an ‘out of hours’ payment.)

However, I also fly to London for Acosta's Don Q, exclusively for the dancers, and twice for the same cast. But I'm really looking forward to Don Q in Paris in the spring, it will of course be Nureyev's version, very nice set, amazing costumes and great dancers.

I assumed she had been chosen for that by Ms Cuthbertson.
Ondine
Very into arts n culture though. Part of her 'hen do' was spent running around the British Museum in pink platforms. 😏 https://www.theweddingedition.co.uk/inside-marie-claire-chappets-london-hen-do/

capybara
Alex might be busy with ‘other things’ this week 😊but Kristen McNally is another good ‘home team’ presenter.
Richard LH
In mentioning, during the Insight, his 3 other colleagues playing Don Q (Gary Avis, Thomas Whitehead, and Bennet Gartside) I was reminded what brilliant character artists the Royal Ballet is currently blessed with. They really add extra levels of depth and enjoyment to the ballets in which they are cast.
