ROH to introduce e-ticketing
bangorballetboy replied to Jane S's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
It is still no refunds. Instead of the usual exchange/resale procedures, during the current situation you can only exchange for a credit certificate (provided you do it earlier than 24 hours before the performance).- 135 replies

ROH to introduce e-ticketing
bangorballetboy replied to Jane S's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Nothing wrong with cutting unnecessary costs, especially if the ROH needs to find £65,000,000 over two years in order not to close. Showing an e-ticket on my telephone is no additional cost to me whatsoever. We have been very lucky over the last however many years in not having to pay a booking/transaction fee at the ROH (unlike most other venues).- 135 replies

What Is Classical Ballet?
bangorballetboy replied to Sim's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
One of the distinctions I often look for in this context is the general use of turnout. -
to quote from gov.uk Social contact As part of Step 3, no earlier than 17 May, the government will look to continue easing limits on seeing friends and family wherever possible, allowing people to decide on the appropriate level of risk for their circumstances. This means that most legal restrictions on meeting others outdoors will be lifted - although gatherings of over 30 people will remain illegal. Indoors, the Rule of 6 or 2 households will apply - we will keep under review whether it is safe to increase this. As soon as possible and by no later than Step 3, we will also update the advice on social distancing between friends and family, including hugging. But until this point, people should continue to keep their distance from anyone not in their household or support bubble.

Aren’t we awaiting government advice on the social distancing rules between friends and family from 17 May? I believe a lot of people are thinking (rightly or wrongly) that the rules will be relaxed so there’s no need to socially distance in your group of 6. Whether everyone who would usually attend in a pair is comfortable in doing so even with relaxed rules is another question entirely (but I’d say that a risk assessment for them to make).

so lots of options there that aren’t the only equitable solution mentioned in the OP. Am pleased Leeds Grand was able to do something helpful but it is a commercial theatre with different funding and different considerations to theatres like the ROH. I do acknowledge that the ROH haven’t gone about this in the best possible way for everyone but I do think there are things going on behind the scenes that affect how this is done. As someone else said on another thread, it’s probable that spending money on a booking system that would deal with this issue wouldn’t be a prudent use of that money in the current circumstances and there are considerations around staffing. Personally, given the (relatively) limited number of performances affected (again, in hope that things are back to normal come September), I think the ROH are stuck between a rock and a hard place on this and are trying very hard to do the right thing and ensure a future for the building and the companies. In doing so, they won’t be able to please everyone but it is (hopefully) only temporary.

Out of interest, do you know any other cultural venue that has done this? I don't think I do (certainly not Sadler's Wells, the Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall, Glyndebourne, Opera Holland Park, Birmingham Rep). I know some venues (commercial theatre) that have had all seats available to purchase and, when one or more seats are purchased, the logarithms in their booking system remove seats from sale to allow for physical distancing. Like everyone else, I am hoping that we will be back to normal come September and this will no longer be an issue at the ROH (and we can concentrate on those annoying places that won't let you book one or more seats if it will leave a single seat).
