  6. Yes, it's certainly recorded sound. I'd say that it was quite loud, but not as unpleasantly so as I've been subjected to elsewhere. But in saying that, I've no way of comparing your husband's threshold for such things with my own.

  9. Matt Bourne's Early Adventures triple bill opened at Cambridge Corn Exchange last night - never my favourite venue - and runs till Saturday. Despite leaving home early, general Doris-related traffic mayhem in the area meant we still arrived just after the start, but were allowed to slip in halfway through the first item. With two pieces from 1991 and another from 1989, but clearly looking well back into the first half of the 20th century, the cast of 6 chaps and 3 girls gave an engaging and witty set of performances from Sir Matt's early rep, before his Swan Lake and all that followed it. Marking 30 years of his New Adventures company, I wonder if he could have imagined back in 1987 that he'd have two companies touring today around the UK? These early pieces are a world away from his Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and Red Shoes but they have charm and fun in abundance. Just the thing at the end of Doris Day - and the traffic had all melted away by going-home time. PS: A post-show Q&A session with Sir Matt and dancers had to be cancelled thanks to no trains running to Cambridge from London. The staff didn't know, but perhaps that might move to tonight or tomorrow?

  13. Well, I've sung with Cambridge Phil lots of times in West Rd and I wondered about the hard-used floor for dance, having hauled risers etc etc across it during many concert setups. That Harlequin-style surface looks fine and that backcloth makes the place look quite different.
  14. The lead feature in the Culture supplement to today's Sunday Times is on Chris Wheeldon and American in Paris, soon to open in London.
  15. Not everything that has been said thus far is entirely accurate. The new coins will enter circulation on 28 March this year - ie in some 6 weeks time. The existing coins will then cease to be legal tender as of 15 October. Perhaps this link might help: http://www.thenewpoundcoin.com/

  17. Well, I've finally seen it, at an Encore screening in Cambridge this afternoon. I have been no strong McGregor fan these past ten years and, had you asked me back then, I'd have said he would never make a work of this kind. I'd have said he didn't have it in him. But I was wrong, and I now feel sure that Woolf Works will last a long time in the contemporary dance canon. He has found in Max Richter a composer who can push him - the piece is a first class example of Balanchine's "See the music, hear the dance." So ten years from now, which 'retired' dancer might star in a revival? Zenaida Yanowsky who, if I'm right, hasn't danced any of the major McGregor pieces this far?
  18. Les Noces - I suspect it appeals to some sense of ritual in those of us who regard it highly. Otherwise, I imagine it is completely terra incognita.
  19. And of a sudden I realise that it has been an age since I last captured a link to one of his pieces, and can probably guess now why that has been. As Janet says, articulate and erudite - Requiescat In Pace.

  21. A piece has now appeared on Ismene Brown's Blog: http://www.ismeneb.com/blogs-list/170203-Prima-ballerina-Alexandrova-quits-Bolshoi.html It seems to consist mainly of tributes, and I'm unsure that it takes matters substantially further forward.

  24. There has just been a piece on BBC4 (You and Yours) about Viagogo and tickets for "Hamilton." There was nobody with a good experience. A commentator was brought in and he reckoned anyone with such tickets was likely to be refused entry.
