It now turns out to have been a mortar round - so smaller than any WW2 bomb, with limited range and presumably of UK manufacture: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-20972375 Might there have been an Army training range or storage facility there at some point? A 'souvenir' dumped by someone?

  8. At the risk of encouraging drift - can anyone tell me whence the nickname "Bay" is derived? I ask as, in addition to Bay Middleton here, I've just come across a First War RFC pilot who was popularly known as "Bay." He was properly a Hubert, and I believe the chap in Mayerling was a George. Is there an equine connection?
