  1. Well, yes. But isn't this item supposed to be Odile's big thing in ensnaring the Prince? Does he walk off if she only manages 30? My point, in terms of the narrative, is does it matter at all? If the audience is busy counting, what the H does the story count any more? Just, as they say, saying.

  5. Geoff: Had the Gospel been read in Latin - pretty rare these days, I fear - then the name (depending on the case used) would have sounded something like that. In English, that pronunciation sounds a touch affected to me.
  6. And I'm just back from Saffron Screen in Saffron Walden - a pretty full house and, apart from one young girl who looked as if she'd been brought straight after ballet class, hard to see anyone there under 50. No Darcey tonight, just Ore Oduba on his own. He did well and was clearly enjoying his talks with Bernstein's biographer, Humphrey Burton. To my surprise, the McGregor piece seemed best, confirming an earlier impression that 10 years working with the RB has softened his approach, whatever may be happening at Company Wayne McGregor. It did, of course, benefit from working over Chichester Psalms. Scarlett's Age of Anxiety lived up to its title, but once will probably be enough for me. The story was carried as much by the faces of the main quartet as anything. Five minutes less would have been good but I guess they had to go with what Bernstein wrote. Ditto in the Wheeldon, with the costumes entirely off-putting. Huge applause for the dancers, whose hearts went into everything in all three pieces.
  7. I stand to be corrected on this particular - but, in any scale of the unlikelihoods encountered during Winter's Tale, the sailing techniques of the crew carrying the exiled child would, I would have thought, have ranked moderately low. However, I'll be the first to admit that we all have our little areas of expertise, and I admit to being similarly smitten by the improbability of military details in many theatrical productions. Heaven knows what bear keepers think about it all.
  8. Nina, I agree about the numbers involved - and that takes me to a frequent niggle about the credits on BBC programmes. Even on a fairly big screen, the numbers named and font size went past so quickly that it was only by going back to the link on John's original post that I was able to confirm that it was Joanna McGregor that I'd seen as pianist.
  9. Indeed, you're quite right. Our paper didn't arrive till after I'd finished Links and I hadn't thought to look at the Business/Money supplement online. 20. Might I suggest that those concerned about BRB's future in Birmingham and related funding aspects go immediately to one of this morning's Links, where they should find some degree of reassurance?
  21. In which case, isn't further banging-on here pointless? What is someone like myself, with no connection whatever to ENB, to conclude - other than that 'something may be amiss' there? I don't feel any better informed today than when this thread started over a month ago.
  22. Geoff: I made a case for Cathy Marston on the other thread. Were funding levels to be an imminent issue, I'd add here that, within weeks of arriving in Bern as Director in 2007, she found she had to mount a political campaign to keep her company in being - and was successful.
  23. Bruce - Another woman, you ask? One who is young, British, RBS trained and thus 'family,' with prior experience as a Company Director and an established international reputation as an intelligent choreographer? I give you Cathy Marston.
  24. Excellent, and Well Done that teacher - always pleased to see the Earl o' Moray turn up somewhere!
