  2. I've been reading rumblings on Ballet Alert for the last couple of years and Eva Kistrup (who does a blog for Danceview Times) hasn't always commented favourably on his directorship.

No ballet company can be a museum as we have long discussed on this forum in respect of RB and BRB but surely there is room for the heritage and style as well as introducing new work and styles.

I was introduced to Bournonville in my very early days of ballet-watching when one of the first productions I booked for in 1985 was Peter Schaufuss' production of La Sylphide and a couple of years later Napoli.  Of course he also covered Bournonville style in his programme Dancer on the BBC in the 1980s.  I just love the style and I also think it informed my love of Ashton.

The Bournonville Festival held in Copenhagen in 2005 has been a highlight of my ballet-watching years fondly remembered.  I hope there is some way forward.  Perhaps Bournonville will need the equivalent of a Sarasota Ballet...

  4. COREY BAKER DANCE PRESENTS A NEW SHORT FILM WITH

HONG KONG BALLET FOR WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

    • Filmed on location in the urban and rural green spaces of Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region of China), Lying Together raises awareness of the vital role of nature in all our lives

Corey Baker Dance, run by award-winning choreographer/director Corey Baker, has created a new short film titled Lying Together.  The film will receive its world premiere screening through BBC’s Culture in Quarantine and in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on UNEP’s YouTube Channel on World Environment Day, Friday 5th June from 6 am BST; it aims to raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity for our health and that of our planet.

Lying Together was filmed in rural and urban settings across Hong Kong, including breathtaking aerial footage of the dancers performing on the tops of the city’s highest skyscrapers. Chen Zhiyao, Amber Lewis, Li Jiabo, Ma Renjie, Forrest Rain Oliveros, along with other members of Hong Kong Ballet, perform Baker’s iconic quirky choreography with zesty musical accompaniment from acclaimed multi-instrumentalist FKJ.

Corey Baker Dance has an international reputation for creating a diverse array of work across film, TV and theatre, using unusual locations and reaching non-traditional theatre audiences.  Antarctica: The First Dance, was filmed on the icy continent celebrating Antarctica while we still have it. It was commissioned by The Space and Channel 4 Random Acts and featured Royal New Zealand Ballet dancer Madeleine Graham. Antarctica: The First Dance has been seen by over 5 million people around the globe to date. Corey is currently creating the new short film Swan Lake Bath Ballet for BBC/The Space, filmed in the (filled) baths of elite ballet dancers from around the world.

Spaghetti Junction, the companion film for Lying Together, also featuring Hong Kong Ballet dancer Forrest Rain Oliveros and two dancers from Birmingham Royal Ballet was filmed on location beneath Birmingham’s (in)famous motorway intersection. Spaghetti Junction was borm out of Baker’s larger programme of work to celebrate Chinese New Year 2020 and was released on BBC Culture in Quarantine to mark World Earth Day earlier this year.

Lying Together was created in partnership with Hong Kong Ballet as part of their Ballet in the City – HKB Goes Viral campaign. The film was supported by Arts Council England, Birmingham Hippodrome, West Midlands Growth Company, Southside BID, Tai Kwun, The Space and Hong Kong Tourism Board.

World Environment Day is the United Nations’s annual day to spotlight the importance of environmental action, and has been celebrated on 5th June since 1974. This year’s theme is biodiversity, accompanied by a campaign dubbed “Time #ForNature.”

Bruno Pozzi, UNEP’s Europe Director, explains: “Nature is behind our food, water, air, climate and medicine. We also know that being close to nature is good for our mental health. Yet biodiversity is under threat like never before. We must breathe life into our cities with more green buildings and spaces, and sustainable transport. This film and accompanying music sends out a powerful message to our eyes and ears let’s celebrate nature, and set our relationship with it on a new track”.

You can watch the world premiere screening of Lying Together at 6 am BST on Friday 5th June as part of World Environment Day  on BBC.CO.UK/ARTS or on the UNEP’s YouTube & website or on all Corey Baker Dance social media platforms

A friend of mine who volunteers there said the programme  is just provisional dependent on the Government giving the go ahead for theatres to open. If this happens they don't want to have nothing in place. If it doesn't then presumably they will have to cancel. Having said that you seem to be able to book seats already (I clicked on a Father Brown play for the middle of September where people have already booked seats and with no social distancing in place). I'd love to think it would happen but I have doubts.

Me too Joan.  My gut feeling is we will be looking at December at the earliest - if not 2021.  I suppose the next couple of weeks of being slightly unlocked will give us some indication of whether there will be a second spike.

    Star-studded 90th celebration
    for bbodance!

     90th_messages.jpg.09c35681602adfd70e456d1a1655ea43.jpg

Patrons, supporters, and members from around the world came together last month to celebrate the 90th anniversary of bbodance, formerly known as the British Ballet Organization (BBO).

Broadcasting from self-isolation, Patrons sent in anniversary messages and letters showcasing what bbodance means to them, while teachers and students shared videos of themselves practising at home during lockdown. Social media followers were also treated to a collection of images from bbodance's long history that brought back a lot of memories.

"There are moments in any crisis when humour and individual actions lift the spirits. In the midst of the pandemic, we celebrated our 90th anniversary. We received lovely videos and messages of support from our President, Dame Beryl Grey, CH, DBE, our Vice President, Sir David Bintley, CBE, and all of our Patrons. One even going to the lengths (due to timing issues) of recording her message in the dark, in the middle of the night," stated bbodance CEO, Robin Bloor.

Joining the celebration was also a large number of new teaching members, who have received access to bbodance syllabi until 1 September, and Dame Darcey Bussell, DBE, a long-time friend of the organisation who often develops her own educational offering in bbodance studios.

bbodance was founded in 1930 by the renowned teacher, Edouard Espinosa, and his wife, the singer and actor, Louise Kelland. Today, bbodance is one of the UK's major dance awarding organisations, providing syllabi, Government-recognised examinations, teacher training, and inspiring events for everyone who loves this art form.

"In its 90 years, the organization has touched the lives of millions of people, introducing them to the joy of dance, and has been responsible for starting the careers of many of the most prestigious artists in the world of professional theatre. What a fantastic organization — Compact, Friendly, High-quality, Ahead of its time, and Fast to react. Sounds a bit like its founder, Edouard Espinosa," wrote Chairman, Nic Espinosa, in his anniversary message.

So was I at the performance as was our very own JMcN.  There was I recall quite some discussion in the interval about Hernandez - he didn't look like he quite belonged in this ballet somehow is what I recall of it!  Dronina wonderful of course and James Streeter as Rothbart well he was in his element!

If I recollect correctly we all met in the intervals.  I didn't watch the streamed performance because, although I like this production, I thought Siegfried was totally miscast.  I would have preferred to see the exquisite Dronina with a different partner.  James Streeter was, of course, magnificent.
