Blame ignorance, but I'm quite surprised that Sadler's Wells employs 200-ish people. Is that normal for a venue? Or is there more to it than meets the eye? (I know if we include the Peacock it's two venues.)

I don't know the exact makeup of the staff but there would be a number of shifts of box office staff, duty managers, front of house staff, technicians, HR, Admin etc, etc.  If many of the staff are not full time it's surprising the numbers of people that could be employed.

  4. Leeds Playhouse has today finally announced that Northern Ballet's Great Gatsby, scheduled for 03-12 September 2020 has been postponed.  Apparently theatre and company are trying to organise dates for the Spring.  At least we (sort of) know where we stand now!

For Northern Ballet that means that the only possible dates left for 2020 are in December if the company can agree with the theatre an alternative existing production for the now postponed Merlin.  If that season cannot go ahead in some form then Northern Ballet had their gala (with guests) on 4th January and the premiere of Geisha on 14th March full stop.  I feel so sad for the company and for their loyal audiences and indeed for everyone desperately wanting to perform or watch a performance again.

  6. Weather forecasts that get it very wrong.  We had our outdoor mosaic workshop cancelled today because the forecast was for rain and thunder all day and we would have been sitting on metal chairs under a metal framed gazebo.  The sun has been cracking the flags all day so far!

While our theatres remain closed, we are thrilled to continue bringing stunning dance to our Digital Stage and beyond.

We have teamed up with the BBC to bring you dance for the whole family, whether you want to get involved or just sit back and enjoy.

Three stunning pieces showcase responses to the pandemic from a host of acrobats and dancers, and Strasbourg 1518 takes inspiration from a historical account of mass dance hysteria. Jordan Douglas (Far From The Norm) takes us on a table top adventure as part of BBC Ten Pieces, and go behind-the-scenes with Kate Prince to find out about the creation of Message in a Bottle.

I read that BRB were looking for an alternative venue to the Hippodrome to put on Nutcracker.
I don’t know where that could be in the Midlands area but I was thinking the Royal Albert Hall

could be good. It’s SO huge I’m sure even with some social distancing in place they could get a reasonable audience in. I suppose it could be costly to open though.
I know RAH is not the ideal for ballet but for this year I would be willing to risk it. Perhaps every other seat for people not in “bubbles” it’s all you get on a bus now!!

BRB have performed a modified version of Swan Lake at the RAH for the last couple of years!  They are due to again this year (and this date has not yet been cancelled).

I think the point is that they are looking for an alternative venue IN THEIR HOME AREA - the West Midlands.  I wondered about the NIA where they have performed before.  It's not ideal but it could work.

  13. Two points:

1). If you have an issue with a post or topic then hit the report button.

2).  When you respond to a post you bring it back to the "top of the pile" when otherwise it may just slip down the topic list and disappear into the mists of time.
